By the time I finish, Reese paces the room. “Okay, time travel is possible, but unpredictable, and you can’t interact with yourself or change things that already happened.”

I nod from my perch on the nightstand.

“And these nightmare creatures are currently killing humans, which we can’t change.”

“Not the ones I already know about,” I cut in.

He spins back to me. “I don’t understand how that works. Whether you know about it or not shouldn’t matter.”

I pull my knees up to my chest. “Think about it like this. I couldn’t destroy the nest in Dreamland because it has to be there for me to find later today, or I wouldn’t have gone on my quest to power up fast in order to warn everyone. If you went to look for this nest on the human plane, something would happen to make you arrive too late, because the nest has to be there for me to find. I can’t talk to Aren right now because we discover this together later. But Jimboba—”

“The baku demon?” Reese interrupts for clarification.

“Yes. Jimboba can gather the baku who I didn’t interact with and they can hunt down the nightmare creatures I didn’t encounter already in the future. When I first arrived in Dreamland later tonight, most of the baku were hiding from me. I assumed it was because they don’t like my kind, but now I believe it’s because, at that time, Jimboba had already pulled them away.”

He relays the info to Xander then falls silent for a bit, nodding every so often. I wait patiently while Xander talks, wishing I had a baku’s power to see past Dreamland to the human plane. That would make this easier, but at least we have Reese as a go-between.

At last, Reese turns back to me. “Xander says we can find this other bridge on our end and deal with it since you don’t know where it was in the future you already lived so we most likely already had this conversation and dealt with the bridge. Does that sound right?”

“Yes.”

He frowns. “And we can do this because we’re humans and the Dreamer is a human construct trapped by demons?”

I bite my lip. “That’s where I’m less sure. It took five powerful demons to imprison it the first time, but I doubt Landon even considered asking witches for help. We’re not exactly friendly toward each other.”

Reese runs a hand through his hair. “To track something like this, we need a piece of it.”

“Does it matter if it’s dead?”

He makes a so-so gesture. “As long as it’s fresh, it should be fine. The more it decays, the more difficult it becomes as it loses its resemblance to the others of its kind.”

“Okay, there’s a dead one in my backyard right now.” A ripple goes through Dreamland, and my link with Emil, Kellen, and Tobias thrums in response. I grin. “Kellen’s about to get thrown out of Dreamland, which means you should be safe to sneak over there now and grab what you need.
